Trump Hits Harris on Guns, Says Shooting Didn’t Change His View on AR-15s

Former President Donald Trump said his position on AR-15s hasn’t changed after a would-be assassin shot him with one and criticized Vice President Kamala Harris’s position on guns during a lengthy press conference.

On Thursday, the Republican nominee spoke about the 2024 campaign to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort. For the first time since he was shot, he was asked about whether his view on the rifle used by the attacker had changed and responded, “It didn’t.” He then went on to attack the Democratic nominee by claiming she supports confiscating firearms.

“She wants to take away everyone’s gun,” Trump said. “If you take away guns… can’t do it because people need guns for protection.”

The Harris Campaign did not respond to a request for comment. However, Harris has not called for confiscation of all firearms. But she had previously pushed for a mandatory buyback of so-called assault weapons, which includes popular firearms like the AR-15, before her campaign walked that position back late last month.

“The VP will not push for a mandatory buy back as president,” Lauren Hitt, a Harris spokesperson, told The Reload in July. Harris herself has not addressed the position change, and her campaign did not respond to questions on why she would no longer push for a mandatory buyback. She has maintained support for banning the sale of AR-15s and similar firearms as well as implementing universal background checks and red flag laws, though.

Trump doubled down on his gun claims later in the press conference. He touted Chicago’s crime rate as evidence strict gun laws don’t work and claimed he completely protected gun rights while in office.

“When I was president, I totally protected the guns, and I think it’s very important,” Trump said. “When the bad guy walks in with a gun, you gotta have some way of protecting yourself.”

The press conference was the first time Trump sought to differentiate himself from Harris on guns since President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. While Harris has continued Biden’s focus on gun control since taking the reigns, Republicans have de-emphasized the issue. The party stripped a series of gun-rights promises from its platform, the Republican National Convention didn’t feature a gun-rights speaker, and Trump snubbed the issue altogether during his record-long acceptance speech. Trump’s Thursday comments could signal he plans to re-commit to actively courting gun voters now that the race has tightened.

Trump also touted his close relationship with the National Rifle Association during the press conference.

“The NRA endorsed me very powerfully every time I ran,” he said. “They gave me the strongest of endorsements.”

He didn’t make any specific policy promises during his comments, but Trump did say he believes gun rights have to be secured.

“Our Second Amendment is a very important right, and it has to be protected,” he said.

  1. Under Trump, the ATF illegally redefined bump stocks as machine guns.

Trump supported red flag laws with “take the guns now and we’ll get the conviction later” or something similar.

Way back when Trump was a democrat (and Clinton supporter) he supported an AR ban.

And he keeps playing into the dialog of self defense – which is not the purpose of the 2nd amendment (although it is a happy secondary effect).
