Pitt County commissioners finalize move prohibiting concealed handguns on county property

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - The Pitt County Board of Commissioners finalized a plan to prohibit concealed handguns on county property in a second hearing Monday.

County commissioners voted on two motions. The first option would not make any changes to the ordinance and would continue allowing those who have a concealed carry license to carry a gun on county property and prohibit the carrying of deadly weapons into county buildings. The motion failed in a 5-3 vote.

The second option, which passed in a 5-3 vote, prohibits concealed handguns on county property.

A commissioner says they surveyed county employees and the overwhelming majority were in favor of allowing concealed handguns on county property. About 300 people petitioned for the county not to change the ordinance.

The county manager says this is a final hearing and no further action will be taken on the ordinance.
